An essential oil for August

Wow - it's August already, and time to tell you about a different essential oil.
I try to choose something that suits the month or season, and it’s been quite easy to do that so far, but it took some thinking before I could settle on something that felt right for August. I knew woody wouldn't suit high summer, but I wasn't sure whether to go for something zingy and citrussy, or sweet and floral.
In the end I did choose something citrussy, but it's a grass not a citrus fruit. Lemongrass suits late summer perfectly: it's like new hay, it's lemony, it's light and refreshing and really uplifting.
Research suggests that it can provide relief from headache pain, can ease rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and acts to calm the nervous system.
It's a really good option for stress because it calms and energises. So if you're feeling frazzled and exhausted it's a good choice to settle your nerves and give you a lift.
Traditionally used in Asia for infectious illness and fever and as an insect repellant. It's also used to relieve indigestion and muscle pains.
It can be a bit much for sensitive skins so use topically with caution.
To use lemongrass essential oil at home:
1-2 drops lemongrass essential oil in 5ml carrier oil like almond or coconut and apply to the skin, as an insect repellant or to ease aches and pains. Apply to your stomach for digestive issues: massage your abdomen in a clockwise circular motion, down the left side across and up the right.
2 drops on a tissue - inhale to calm, energize and uplift, or to soothe symptoms of illness. Or pop in your diffuser or oil burner.
If you fancy trying a lemongrass bath I'd recommend blending with geranium and/or grapefruit. 2 drops each of lemongrass, geranium and grapefruit essential oils or, 3 drops lemongrass essential oil and 3 drops of geranium or grapefruit. Add to 10ml carrier oil, full fat milk or unscented bath foam, mix well, and add to warm running water.
(Don't apply neat essential oil directly to the skin, use in the recommended concentrations and don't use in pregnancy. Use lemongrass oil cautiously on sensitive skin. Always buy your essential oils from a reputable supplier.)
