An essential oil for October

Here we are in October. The leaves are really starting to change now and there's a hint of coal and woodsmoke in the air.
I've chosen Vetiver for October as it has a woody and smoky quality that really suits this time of year. Despite its deep, woody, smoky scent, vetiver is a grass and the essential oil is extracted from the dried roots.
The grass is native to Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India and was also used for making mats, awnings and sunshades, with the fragrance helping to deter insects.
In aromatherapy use, it is known as 'the oil of tranquility' and it's traditionally used for treating the symptoms of stress and depression. It's also a warming oil so is good for muscular aches and pains. It is also used to tone mature skin.
Some preliminary research suggests that inhaling vetiver may increase alertness and improve focus, while also aiding relaxation, so it could be beneficial for anxiety. Anecdotally some people report finding vetiver oil useful for ADHD, however there is limited research to support this.
Another study found that diffusing vetiver essential oil while sleeping could improve breathing patterns.
How to use vetiver at home:
2 drops on a tissue to inhale.
Add 1 or 2 drops vetiver essential oil to 5ml carrier oil and apply to the skin.
Baths are a great way to use essential oils, and a vetiver bath would be perfect for relaxing after a stressful day. I would recommend blending vetiver with another oil such as jasmine, lavender, clary sage or ylang ylang. Choose 2 oils and start with 10ml carrier oil, full fat milk or unscented bath foam and add 1 drop of each of your chosen oils. Add more of either oil to blend to your taste up to a maximum of 6 drops in total. Add your mixture to warm running water.
(Don't apply neat essential oil directly to the skin, use in the recommended concentrations and don't use in pregnancy. Always buy your essential oils from a reputable supplier.)
Alternatively, drop me a message to book in and try vetiver essential oil as part of your bespoke blend for your next massage appointment.
Until next time, if you can, lean into this season of cosy jumpers and blankets, woodsmoke and enjoy the changing colours of the leaves.
